Biden to House Migrants in National Park

The individual who, while running for president in 2019, famously declared that “this country can tolerate a heck of a lot more people” has found that “tolerate” maybe, but “house” is another subject. That individual, now President Joe Biden, finds himself up to his Depends in illegal newcomers. (Former President Donald Trump says he believes those newcomers may total as many as 15 million.)

Biden’s most recent plan is to open up the National Park System, once a cherished resource for American citizens and legal visitors, to the international rabble he has assembled in his catastrophic tenure. In September, the Department of the Interior agreed to lease property in Gateway National Recreation Area’s Floyd Bennett Field, managed by the National Park Service, to the local government for use as a site for temporary shelters for illegal migrants. Those shelters have since been built.

Any such shifting of control of federal property is required by law to be reviewed for possible environmental impact, but — true to form — the Biden administration has given itself a pass and ignored the law.

In response, House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Bruce Westerman (R-AR) and Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ), the top Republican member of the panel’s oversight subcommittee, sent a letter on Monday to White House Council on Environmental Quality Chairwoman Brenda Mallory, warning that the federal government appeared to ignore environmental concerns when leasing the Floyd Bennett Field.

Regardless of personal or political beliefs on immigration or migrant policy, there is common ground in keeping our national parks – some of America’s most treasured spaces – out of the debate. All national parks, whether in rural or urban areas, exist for visitors to experience wonder, to recreate and find joy, or to simply learn more about the great history of our nation. However, national parks are not a place to house people, temporarily or permanently, who lack shelter.

Considering the massive environmental damage being inflicted by migrants on land along our southern border, it may be time for Americans to enjoy their national parks while they still can, before the world’s masses are turned loose there.
