Farm Bill Would Prevent Modernization

Neil Munro, a writer for Breitbart, notes along with other commentators that the Farm Workforce Modernization Act of 2019, now before the House, would do the exact opposite of its title. By ensuring that growers would have a continuous supply of cheap immigrant labor, it would retard mechanization of agriculture.

Without mechanization, he maintains, much of our agriculture will continue to rely on labor-intensive methods of planting and harvest that have “changed little in the past 10,000 years.” Meanwhile in other countries, Munro observers, “farm companies . . . are investing in labor-saving machinery. Their investments in technology are reducing their need for farm workers and are helping them compete against American farmers.”
