EAGLE Falls: GOP/Lib Alliance Deep Six Sec. 7

The Equal Access to Green cards for Legal Employment Act of 2022 (rather awkwardly dubbed the “EAGLE Act”) has failed, due to opposition from Republicans and a small faction of House Democrats. That unlikely alliance focussed on Section 7 of the Act, which would have provided permanent work permits for 300,000 Indian guest workers already holding temporary visas. According to Rosemary Jenks of NumbersUSA:

[The bill] makes all of these temporary worker programs permanent, so that all of these jobs will be permanently removed from American workers. . . .

The EAGLE bill had been promoted heavily by FWD.us–a big business group that includes  Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, and other Silicon Valley CEOs–and numerous Indian lobbying groups. Virtually all Republican House members–even the eight Republican co-sponsors–yesterday signalled their opposition to Section 7 and the overall bill. They were joined by a group of far-left Dems, including members of the Black Caucus, who opposed the blatant preferences being shown Indian workers. Democrat leaders, seeing the bill was doomed, canceled plans to call for a vote.

The defeat of EAGLE in this lame-duck session of Congress is joined by the apparent failure of a farmworker amnesty and the expected failure of a Senate-proposed amnesty for DACA Dreamers.
