DHS Disburses $77 Million

The Department of Homeland Security announced this week that it would be doling out $77 million in FEMA money to a total number of 53 recipients — NGOs and muncipalities —  to cover “temporary shelter and other eligible costs associated with migrants awaiting the outcome of their immigration proceedings.”

The new funds come on top of money handed out earlier this fiscal year, bringing the total to about $770 million.

The largest single grant will be to El Paso, Texas, which has been one of the busiest areas for illegal migrant traffic. It will receive $13.2 million. Pima County, Arizona, will receive $2.6 million, and a number of states in the interior will receive funds as well, including:

  • New York City — $2.2 million
  • Chicago — $2.2 million
  • Washington, D.C. — $1.1 million
  • Philadelphia — $912 thousand
  • Atlanta — $1.2 million
  • Denver — $392 thousand

Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) involved in caring for illegals, such as Catholic Charities in the Diocese of San Diego, will receive funding as well —  in their case, a whopping $12.8 million. Other NGOs in Texas and Arizona, including food banks, will receive funds as well.

Note that this wanton throwing away of tax money is very much NOT to “protect the border.” It is to pay the penalty for not protecting it. And we’ll be paying off that self-imposed obligation for a long, long time.
