Court: Trump Can Defund Sanctuaries

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld the policy of the Trump Administration to cut federal funding to sanctuary states and localities. These are jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration law enforcement. This ruling overturned a previous circuit court decision against the policy.

The opinion of the latest ruling stated “These [sanctions] help the federal government enforce national immigration laws and policies supported by successive Democratic and Republican administrations. But more to the authorization point, they ensure that applicants satisfy particular statutory grant requirements imposed by Congress and subject to Attorney General oversight.”
