Yesterday, Joe Biden, en route to a meeting with his two “amigos” Trudeau of Canada and Lopez Obrador of Mexico, briefly stopped by El Paso to visit the border for the first time in his over-long career.
But the border Biden saw was not the border we and many others have been describing here for months and years. Local and federal officials in El Paso had made sure the city had been cleaned up for Biden’s visit. Gone were the encampments on city streets and gone were the “piles of blankets, clothes and toys” left behind by the migrants, who had been rousted out and arrested to prettify the city’s optics in advance of the Demented One’s arrival. As El Paso Matters reported on January 5:
The sounds of crowds of people talking, crying, laughing and praying around the streets of Downtown El Paso were silenced overnight Wednesday as U.S. Border Patrol agents swept up large crowds of migrants near the Greyhound bus terminal. [The blankets, etc] were thrown away by city crews who quickly swept and cleaned up the area.
In a scene that otherwise would have been anathema to pro-migrant forces, the agents removed huge numbers of migrants from the streets, causing one Colombian migrant to say, “To see people run, the fear in their eyes, it was heartbreaking.”
But, from the administration’s point of view, it was all necessary, to prevent Biden from seeing–and, more important, being seen among–the effects of his insane border policies.
Those insane policies were pointed to, however, in a letter Gov. Greg Abbott handed to Biden on his arrival, a letter that read in part:
Your visit to our southern border with Mexico today is $20 billion too little and two years too late. Moreover, your visit avoids the sites where mass illegal immigration occurs and sidesteps the thousands of angry Texas property owners whose lives have been destroyed by your border policies. Even the city you visit has been sanitized of the migrant camps which had overrun downtown El Paso because your Administration wants to shield you from the chaos that Texans experience on a daily basis. This chaos is the direct result of your failure to enforce the immigration laws that Congress enacted.
Protected as he is by the enormous power of the U.S. government–not to mention the worsening neurocognitive fog in his brain–Joe Biden can pretend that all is well in the country he is driving off a cliff. But Americans know better.
