Biden Backs Down on $450K Giveaway

On October 29, we reported here that the Biden administration was seriously considering awarding a whopping $450,000 to each and every member of any family of illegal migrants who had been separated at the border during the Trump years. Such a sum would have totalled at least a billion dollars in payouts.

Government officials had been negotiating for months with 940 lawyered-up families to arrive at an acceptable level of tribute. They no doubt thought $450K was a bargain, given that the families (backed by armies of immigration lawyers) were demanding no less than $3.4 million per individual.

Fortunately, when word got out, that feeling was not shared by the American people at large. Surveys showed overwhelming opposition to the payout, and now, months later, the Biden government has thrown in the towel and relented on the absurd payout. They now say they will litigate individually with the families, declaring no predetermined sum.

This has raised the ire of the sanctimonious left, of course. One attorney involved in the negotiations declared:

We are hardly naive that politics sometimes plays a role in Justice Department decisions, but it is shameful that it happened when the lives of little children are at stake. History will not look kindly on the Biden administration’s decision not to stand up for these small children.

As usual the left is unvarying in its smug confidence that it will write the history books. We shall see.
