Migrants, Disappointed with U.S., Again Head North — to Canada

Early last month, we compared the spectacle of American states’ and cities’ sending of illegal migrants to and fro to the kid’s game of “Hot Potato,” where no one wants to be caught holding the potato. In a January 6 posting, we asked, “Will [NYC Mayor] Adams pass his hot potato along? If so, where?” Our guess at the time was Florida, but it turns out we were 180 degrees off. The answer: Canada.

Right. In the dead of a cold winter, migrants are departing New York using state-financed bus tickets good for travel to points near the border with the Great White North. On February 5, the New York Post spoke with a Venezuelan national who said the NY National Guard gave him and his family tickets to Plattsburgh, about 20 miles south of the Canadian border. He explained that he was headed to Canada to seek “a better quality of life for my family.”

In Plattsburg, the migrants–which are said to number five busloads per day–board shuttles to an unofficial border crossing. After passing through a break in the concrete barrier, they are routinely taken into custody by Canadian officials and provided with legalizing documents.

The migrants the Post talked to believed Canada a better destination than the U.S. had proved, considering the homelessness and crime they had encountered here. One migrant said, “I am going to Canada for the safety and future of my girls. I only ask God that everything goes well and that Canada is not like the United States.”

Not that we’re complaining, but think of the ignominy of it all. Shunned by migrants fleeing a pesthole like Venezuela. Such is the state of Bidenworld.
