Trump Vows to End Birthright Citizenship

Former President Donald Trump said that if elected president in 2024 he would issue an executive order to end birthright citizenship. Under this current interpretation of federal law, the children of illegal aliens born on U.S. territory automatically become U.S. citizens.

Illegal alien advocates maintain that this is a constitutional right guaranteed by the 14th Amendment. Those who disagree say the amendment only gives citizenship to those born here under U.S. “jurisdiction,” which would not include children of illegal foreign nationals. Past Supreme Court rulings seemingly have upheld this position. If it were proclaimed by executive order, the issue probably would go to the Supreme Court for legal clarification.

In his statement, Trump declared, “As part of my plan to secure the border on Day One of my new term in office, I will sign an executive order making clear to federal agencies that under the correct interpretation of the law, going forward the future children of illegal aliens will not receive automatic U.S. citizenship.”
