Sun Sentinel Promotes Lawlessness

The Quote Below—More Misinformation from the Media

“[I]n Florida, people will likely pay higher prices for fruit and produce on account of the new anti-immigration law DeSantis signed— price hikes that, experts say, could be caused by fearful migrants fleeing to other states.

“The new Florida law penalizes employers of 25 workers or more who don’t consult the federal government’s E-Verify system to see if new hires are properly documented. Aside from being error-prone, E-Verify is easily foiled with borrowed documents. The greater harm in this law is intimidation: criminal punishment for anyone, even a family member, who “knowingly” transports an undocumented immigrant across state lines. Other facets of meanness forbid them from using driver licenses issued in other states and require hospitals to account for immigrants they treat. . . .

“Those of us whose ancestors weren’t here to welcome the Mayflower ought to remember that the United States owes its vitality and its reputation to the fact we are all immigrants or their progeny. Diversity is our strength. . . .

“It wasn’t until early in the 20th century that there were any significant restrictions on immigration. The political pressure for a crackdown was racist, the same as now.

“Rather than unnecessary displays of police power, politicians like DeSantis and [Greg] Abbott ought to be advocating for comprehensive immigration reform that America urgently needs.

“Everyone knows what it must entail: Fairer quotas and family reunification, swifter determination of asylum requests, a comprehensive guest worker program allowing people to come and go easily, and a path to earned citizenship for the more than 11 million people who are already part of our national fabric in every respect but the law.

“Ten years ago, the Senate gave strong bipartisan support to a reform written by, among others, Sen. Marco Rubio. It was dead on arrival in a hyper-partisan Republican House. . . .

“That’s the fault of opportunistic politicians like Abbott, DeSantis and Donald Trump, who prefer to exploit bigotry and to demagogue about a problem rather than solve it.” – Florida’s Latest Misguided Immigration Adventure, South Florida Sun Sentinel, Editorial Board, 5/23/23 [Link]

Fact Check of Above Quote: These editorialists seem to have no respect for our immigration laws—and by extension no respect for our country’s rule of law. They endorse no steps at all to stop illegal immigration, while promoting “comprehensive reform” (including mass amnesty) which will encourage it all the more. Amnesty promotes lawlessness by rewarding it. The entire editorial panders to the interests of illegal aliens and their American supporters.

The editorialists point America’s past when we had few restrictions on immigration. That rightly changed after we populated a largely empty continent. We needed to limit immigration at that point for a number of political, cultural and economic reasons. One of them wasn’t “racism” as this editorial ignorantly claims. Most of the early 20th Century immigrants were white Europeans.

Today, more so than ever, we are a developed and populated country with no need for endless mass immigration. This is why immigration restriction is proper and reasonable. To say we must never turn away immigrants because some of our ancestors were immigrants is absurd. It’s like saying that a business whose employees were once job applicants must hire every new applicant without limit.

America doesn’t exist to admit immigrants. It exists to serve its people and their interests. Unlimited mass immigration harms our national unity and the economic prospects of our working people. The editorialists repeat the mindless propaganda that “diversity is our strength.” It is nothing of the kind. Immigration-fueled diversity is weakening the ties that bind us as a nation. Mass immigration also suppresses the wages of American workers, particularly those of lower skills and income. As lower wages boost companies’ profits, immigration acts to shift wealth from poor people to rich people.

The E-Verify system helps to protect American workers by stopping the hiring of illegal aliens. Just what do the editorialists have against this? Maybe they don’t care because it’s not their jobs that are at stake. Illegal aliens seldom apply to become editorial writers. In any case, they are wrong about E-Verify being ineffective.

Contrary to the editorialists’ claim, political leaders who care about our borders and laws are not opportunists and bigots. They are honorable statesmen who are trying to perform their legitimate duties.
