Sen. Cochran Fails to Sign Anti-Amnesty Pledge

Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS), a GOP Establishment favorite locked in a tough primary fight with state senator Chris McDaniel, is trying to dodge signing a three-part candidate pledge that radio talk show host Laura Ingraham and other immigration control patriots are widely circulating and promoting. McDaniel was the first candidate to sign the pledge and is making immigration control a major issue in his attempt to replace Cochran. Cochran said of the pledge: “I haven’t looked at it.”

The 3 planks in the pledge are: 1) no work permits for illegal aliens; 2) no increase in the number of legal immigrants (already at a million a year and growing); 3) no increase in foreign “guest workers.” The first plank does not use the word “amnesty” to prevent slippery politicians from telling Middle American voters they are against “amnesty” when they really support letting illegals stay, work and receive benefits. Perhaps the leading example of such a fake “anti-amnesty” politician is Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC), who supports the mass immigration positions of her cheap labor business donors, but benefits from massive media buys by a Mark Zuckerberg  front group deceptively calling her tough on border control and against amnesty.

A strong reason that Sen. Cochran can’t be trusted to work for tough immigration control can be found in his inner circle of fundraisers and campaign leaders. Joe Sanderson, owner of the chicken processor Sanderson Farms, said to be the largest industry in the state, is Sen. Cochran’s fundraising chairman. Sanderson is a longtime ally of lobbyist and former Gov. Haley Barbour, whose D.C.-based lobbying firm has actually been paid by the government of Mexico to lobby for amnesty. Barbour is a leader in Cochran’s reelection effort. Sanderson says Barbour’s powerful political network has been turned over to Cochran’s campaign: “I do believe they are virtually the same people.”

Sanderson employs former Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS) as his main lobbyist working for amnesty and more guest workers. Needless to say Lott is a strong supporter of Cochran over the more conservative challenger McDaniel.  Lott followed a similar career path as has Sen. Cochran: working his way up the ladder of elected offices as a rock solid conservative appealing to the conservative voters of the state, but eventually becoming a Washington insider closer to wealthy donors than the folks back home.  Then he left office to cash in as a top D.C. lobbyist.  It is a safe bet that if all of the fat cat money behind Cochran fails to buy him another senate term, he won’t go home to Mississippi, but will find a $300,000+ perch with the other lawmakers turned influence-peddlers on K Street.
