Santorum: Cutting Immigration Must Be 2Ol6 Issue

Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) said Monday that reducing legal, not just illegal, immigration should be at the front of the presidential debate, explaining that working Americans have suffered from an influx of tens of millions of immigrants over the past two decades.  “Legal immigration is an issue in this campaign and I think as long as we are around it will be an issue…” he told The Washington Times.

Santorum has said legal immigration, which totals about one million new residents a year, should be cut by 25%.  He believes that the issue should be viewed through the lens of struggling American workers, not immigrant-rights advocates.  The only other presidential contender in either party to express openness to reducing legal immigration numbers is Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker who did not mention the subject in his announcement speech Monday.
