‘Public Charge’ Ends

The Biden Administration has officially ended the “public charge” rule that the Trump Administration sought to enforce. Under that provision, codified in immigration law, immigrants who use welfare programs such as food stamps and Medicaid are generally barred from becoming permanent residents and thereby attaining a pathway to citizenship.

Soon after taking office, President Biden moved to end this protection for American taxpayers. Last week, the new policy against enforcing “public charge” went into effect.
