That “mystery bus” we reported on on Tuesday turned out after all to be from the original lone star himself, Governor Greg Abbott of Texas. The guv was just spreading the wealth by adding Philadelphia to his list of beneficiary cities, sort of a “Philadelphia experiment.”
The governor is having a busy week. The next day, Abbott upped the ante in his poker game with Washington, formally declaring an invasion of his home state is underway and spelling out Washington’s responsibility to defend against it. At the same time, he acknowledged his own government’s duties in the crisis and indicated a series of steps the state of Texas will take in response, the exporting of migrants north among them.
Meanwhile, back in the City of Brotherly Love, Mayor James Kenney, who on the one hand declared he was simply delighted to greet the newcomers, on the other hand savagely attacked Abbott as “cruel and racist.” The Governor replied:
Kenney has long-celebrated and fought for sanctuary city status, making the city an ideal addition to Texas’ list of drop-off locations.
“Celebrated” is the word. In 2018, after a court decision affirming Philadelphia as a sanctuary city, Kenney literally danced a jig in his office.
Dealing with such nutcases is challenging, but probably has its amusing moments. Press on, Governor.
