The House of Representatives failed to impeach Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas by a vote of 216-214 vote against impeachment. The vote was along party lines, with three Republican defectors providing the margin of victory for the anti-impeachment side. They were Reps. Ken Buck (R-CO), Tom McClintock (R-CA) and Mike Gallagher (R-WI).
These Republicans claimed that they opposed Mayorkas’ policies, but that his actions did not meet the standard of “high crimes and misdemeanors” required for impeachment. Supporters of impeachment argued that if the Biden Administration’s systematic sabotage of immigration law enforcement doesn’t reach that level of malfeasance, it hard to imagine what would.
