A Gallup poll conducted in 122 countries around the world found that 160 million adults would like to emigrate to the United States. The majority of them live in southern Africa and countries south of Mexico.
If we opened our gates to all these people, the resulting influx would far exceed 160 million. Under our immigration laws, immigrants can bring their spouses and minor children. Once here they can petition for other relatives to come, including parents, siblings, and grown children. These relatives in turn can bring in selected categories of their relatives–and the cycle goes on and on.
This “chain migration” based on family connections is a key reason why we’ve had unprecedented levels of immigration in recent decades.
