LA Sheriff Defends Sanctuary Policy

Los Angeles is a sanctuary city, i.e., a city that refuses to cooperate with federal immigration authorities to remove illegal aliens. The Washington Examiner has found, after examination of federal data, that Los Angeles has ignored more than 25,000 requests from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to hand over, for deportation, illegal aliens arrested for various crimes. This means that these criminals can re-enter American society once their detention ends, and victimize citizens.

Los Angles Country Sherifff Alex Villanueva defends this policy by claiming that it encourages illegal aliens to report crimes. Otherwise, he says, the fear of deportation would make them reluctant to contact police. Ice director of removal operations Henry Lucero said Villanueva’s claim was wrong because an illegal alien who steps forward as the witness or a victim of a crime can obtain a visa to prevent deportation.
