“Illegal Pass,” TX, Is New Hot Spot

The town of Eagle Pass, Texas, on the border about 55 miles southeast of Del Rio, is earning the nickname “Illegal Pass” these days, as on average about 500 illegal aliens are “encountered” there on a daily basis.

Nearly 250 were arrested a few nights ago as part of a single group, and this past weekend, over 1600 were taken into custody. Officials say smugglers arrange for large groups to cross at points like Eagle Pass as diversions to tie up law enforcement while they smuggle drugs or so-called “high-value” migrants across elsewhere.

Eagle Pass, like Del Rio–the site of the “Bidenville” debacle in September–is part of the Border Patrol’s Del Rio Sector, which saw 28,073 migrants arrested in the month of October. That figure represented about 900 encounters per day in the sector, but this month Eagle Pass alone is seeing at least 500.

All told, in October the Border Patrol encountered 158,000 illegals along the border with Mexico but returned no more than 59,000. The remainder were placed in temporary holding facilities while awaiting processing, and more than 60,000 of them were released into the United States.
