Illegal Immigration Limits Housing

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) stated that illegal immigration is much more than an law and order problem. It also casts a shadow on the economic prospects of middle and working class Americans. Sen. Vance made his remarks during a recent Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee hearing.

One example he cited, particularly for low-wage U.S. workers, is downward pressure on their incomes from job competition by illegal aliens. Another negative consequence, often not discussed, is pushing Americans out of the housing market.

Vance observed that “If you think about what it means to have 20 . . . million . . . illegal immigrants in a country, in a situation where we’re not building enough housing, you have way more buyers for way fewer homes, and that puts incredible pressure on [citizen] home buyers. . . .”
