Illegal Alien Crisis Spurs Renewed Calls for Border Barriers

Eight years after passage of the “Secure Fence Act of 2006,” some members of Congress are demanding that the law be obeyed and the Obama administration finish building the physical barriers it requires. Rep. Jim Bridenstine (R-OK) says: “If we want to solve this problem, we need to secure the southern border.”

The largely  ignored law, signed by then-President George W. Bush, authorized hundreds of miles of fence, in addition to more checkpoints, cameras, vehicle barriers and lighting to achieve 100% “operational control” of the southern border.  Bridenstine’s office cites findings that the U.S. only has operational control over 44% of the border.  Bridenstine wants the National Guard sent to help the Border Patrol while hundreds of miles of double-layer fence are completed.

One section of the double-layered fence was built back in the 1990s near San Diego and dramatically reduced illegal entries there, forcing illegals to cross into Arizona, and, more recently, into Texas.  The Obama regime has built part of the fence, but refuses to complete it.
