Haitians Begin Arriving

In the past week, we’ve reported here on the departure from southern Mexico of hundreds of Haitians and other nationalities in caravans headed to the United States. While the government of Mexico has attempted to break up those caravans, deny travel authority to the illegal migrants, and otherwise prevent their unlawful travel, nevertheless we are now hearing that many have arrived at our border–and have crossed it.

In an exclusive report on Breitbart News, staff writer Randy Clark has detailed the arrival of thousands of Haitians and other illegal migrants in the vicinity of Del Rio, Texas, during the past several days.

According to Clark, more than 2,000 such illegal migrants have crossed the Rio Grande in the past week and for the most part have immediately surrendered to the Border Patrol–if they could find an agent. Hundreds more are said to be arriving daily, and U.S. officials have run out of detention space. Many of the illegals are simply waiting along the river’s edge for transportation and processing.

Del Rio, directly across the Rio Grande from the Mexican city of Ciudad Acuna, is the most popular border crossing point for Haitian nationals and accounts for 69 percent of their arrests.

An unnamed CBP source told Clark the number of Haitians crossing the border increased in May when DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced the eligibility of Haitians for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), due to that nation’s ongoing “security concerns, social unrest, an increase in human rights abuses, crippling poverty, and lack of basic resources.”

“After careful consideration,” Mayorkas said at the time, “we determined that we must do what we can to support Haitian nationals in the United States until conditions in Haiti improve so they may safely return home.” Given the chronic shambles of Haitian society and the history of the so-called “temporary” TPS designation stretching into multiple decades, don’t hold your breath on that happening anytime soon.
