Haitian TPS Extension Canceled

Last summer, the Biden administration extended Temporary Protected Status for Haitian nationals in the US illegally, some of whom had been here since an earthquake in Haiti 11 years earlier. That extension was to ensure continued TPS coverage until February 2026. TPS protects illegal foreigners from deportation and provides work permits for nationals of countries deemed “unsafe.”

Now that extension has been cut short. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem has announced that TPS protection for Haitians will expire in August of this year instead. As of summer 2024, an estimated 520,000 Haitians were living in the US under TPS.

The move follows a similar move earlier this month that removed TPS from 300,000 illegals, most of them Venezuelans.

In a statement, DHS said, “We are returning integrity to the TPS system, which has been abused and exploited by illegal aliens for decades. President Trump and Secretary Noem are returning TPS to its original status: temporary.”
