“Got-Aways” Are Unknown but Off the Chart

The CBP has released an official report revealing the number of encounters of illegal migrants crossing our southern border from Mexico last month.

Officially, there were a total of 207,416 encounters in June, down from the record 240,991 in May. Of these, 105,161 were sent back, including 92,273 expelled under Title 42, which Biden has been trying to abolish. Officially, 79,652 migrants were released into the US, including 15,271 “unaccompanied children,” a four percent increase in that category from May.

As usual, the number of “got-aways” for June is anybody’s guess. The CBP estimates that so far this fiscal year there have been more than 476,000 of them, a total that already exceeds the FY2021 estimate of 389,000. Got-aways are notoriously hard to estimate, but they are “what people need to look at,” according to Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson. In a recent interview, Dodson estimated that at least 70% of migrants are actually getting across unnoticed. “That may be even too low of a number. We have no clue how many get away, no clue,” said Dodson.

According to The Center Square website:

Those in law enforcement have expressed concerns to The Center Square that the got-aways are the ones who keep them up at night. Those evading capture, not surrendering to Border Patrol requesting asylum or making other immigration claims are more likely those with criminal records and don’t want to be caught, they say.
Law enforcement officers say they don’t know who they are, where they are now, or really how many there are in the U.S. [Emphasis added.]
