El Paso Surrenders

The El Paso sector this year has been one of the busiest sectors along the entire southern border, seeing upwards of 6,000 illegal migrants per week crossing unimpeded from Mexico.

The city’s Democrat administration was for a while engaged rather uncomfortably alongside Republican Governor Abbott’s Operation Lone Star in busing migrants north to New York City and Chicago. Those busing days are now over, however, says El Paso Deputy City Manager Mario D’Augostino. Washington must cough up $7 million in reimbursements as well as its blessing “before we start any other operations,” says D’Augostino.

It’s not that things have gotten better. They have gotten worse. The shelters are still full, but now the city’s coffers are empty. Some city council members have urged Mayor Oscar Leeser to declare a state of emergency, which would open up access to federal money. But Lesser has demurred, arguing that the White House had told him not to do so as it would “make President Biden look bad.”

Washington’s decision to allow Title 42 removal of Venezuelan migrants had eased the crush somewhat in October, prompting El Paso to close its welcome center due to lack of funding. Since then, however, migrants from Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, and Nicaragua have targeted the sector anew, on many days sending 1,400 migrants across from Mexico. And so, the beleaguered city, in order to protect Joe Biden from looking any worse than he already does, has essentially surrendered, refusing to budge until paid what they say they are due.

The daily onslaught of migrants continues, of course: 600 were released onto El Paso’s streets over the weekend, with no let-up in sight.
