Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) has introduced the Border Safety and Security Act which, in his words, “would force the administration to control the flow of illegal migration at our southern border and ensure U.S. immigration laws are enforced.” Specifically, it would empower authorities to turn away migrants who do not have valid entry documents.
A vocal critic of his bill is Tony Gonzales (R-TX) who has proclaimed that it is “unchristian.” One who takes strong issue with this claim is William Wolfe, who writes for Daily Caller News Foundation. He maintains that it is consistent with Christian teaching for a country to secure its border.
Among other points, Wolfe observes that “The Bible unapologetically upholds the concept of sovereign nations. . . . [and] “makes it crystal clear that governments should prioritize defending their citizens from harm (Romans 13:1-7).”
