In the coming days and weeks., a lot will be said here and elsewhere about the Biden amnesty bill, delivered to Congress yesterday. For today, let’s take a look at one particular provision: amnesty and eventual citizenship for the already deported.
During the four years of the Trump administration, more than 900,000 persons were deported from the United States. Some of those deportees were removed for having arrived in this country illegally. Others were noncitizens originally here legally but who had committed any of a wide range of criminal or otherwise fraudulent acts, such as possession of controlled substance, firearms trafficking, money laundering, espionage, sabotage, terrorism, or other “aggravated felonies,” such as rape and murder.
Some of those offenses are felonies, some only misdemeanors. What Joe Biden aims to do is invite back those deportees convicted of no more than a couple misdemeanors, presumably with his heartfelt apologies.
Take, for example, traffic offenses, common among many aliens. In 2019 alone, ICE arrested illegal aliens who collectively had more than 74,500 convictions or charges involving drunk driving. How many of those who were actually deported isn’t known, but the vast majority would not be prioritized for deportation now and, if deported, would be eligible to return. Each would then be eligible to apply for a green card and citizenship within eight years.
Will Biden send airplanes to collect those whom Trump had removed? We wouldn’t put it past him.
