Biden Cancels Deportations to Africa and Haiti During Black History Month

Keeping track of Joe Biden’s on-again, off-again policy of deportations–and his ideological and political reasons for that policy–is getting complicated.

As we all know, the fabled “Day One” of the Biden administration, as promised, saw an executive order halting all deportations of illegal aliens for 100 days. Then came a lawsuit from Texas and a federal judge’s agreement to nullify that order, followed by an extension of the nullification. So, Biden recommenced the previously scheduled deportation flights. Fifteen people were deported to Jamaica on January 28, and 269 people to Guatemala and Honduras on January 29, with more to come.

But, faced with the onset of February’s Black History Month, Biden seems to have lost his nerve. A flight containing 60 Cameroonian, Angolan, and Congolese deportees had been scheduled to depart Alexandria, Louisiana, on February 3. However, within hours of the planned departure, the flight was suddenly cancelled. According to an article in the Washington Post:

When ICE scheduled a deportation flight to Africa for earlier this month, lawyers and activist groups sent urgent requests to political appointees at the White House and DHS, asking them to intervene. Their request asked for the administration to give the deportees more time to pursue humanitarian claims in immigration courts, noting that the flight to majority-Black countries had been scheduled during Black History Month, emails show. Within hours, the acting director of ICE wrote to senior staff, stopping the deportations. [Emphasis added.]

That’s right. So wedded to his ideological biases–and his core constituency–is Joe Biden that he allows an “observance”–statutorily indistinguishable from, say, Italian-American Heritage and Culture Month (October) or National Pet Month (May) or National Ice Cream Month (July) or any one of scores of other month-long observances–to take precedence over the enforcement of the law.

Continuing his slavish concern for Black History Month optics, Biden then cancelled a flight to Haiti scheduled for February 5 that would have carried 166 Haitian deportees. In fact, bowing to a barrage of calls, tweets, and assorted other demands, he indefinitely suspended all future deportation flights to Haiti, which in the next two weeks alone would have returned home nearly 1,800 other Haitians.

In related news, a coalition of black immigrant advocacy groups declared this week “Black Immigrant Advocacy Week of Action.”

Too bad there’s not some kind of American Citizen month, but maybe Joe thinks that’s April, when we taxpayers get to pay for his lunacy.
