Afghans, Not Eligible for SIV? No Problem–Come On In Anyway

On August 16, we cited a report by Daniel Greenfield, writing for FrontPage Magazine, about the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) scam in regard to the on-going train wreck in Afghanistan. Briefly, Greenfield debunked the notion that 20,000+ Afghans (along with an indefinite but inevitably huge number of family members) were qualified for SIVs as “interpreters.”

Given that, it turns out it doesn’t matter anyway. Secretary of State Antony Blinken had already created a work-around “Priority-2” category for those Afghans ineligible for SIVs. To qualify for a P-2, it appears that an Afghan has to claim to have done something at some time for some U.S. funded contractor or NGO or maybe a U.S.-based media organization.

Can’t make the cut for an SIV or P-2? There’s always Priority-1 (P-1), which provides resettlement of those who “by virtue of their circumstances and apparent need for resettlement” can wangle a referral by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) or some NGO or other.

That would seem to cover most everybody except the hardest-core Talibanana. But wait, there’s more.

A group of Senate Democrats, joined by Republican colleagues Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), have sent a letter to Blinken and DHS Secretary Mayorkas, asking them to “create a humanitarian parole category specifically for women leaders, activists, human rights defenders, judges, parliamentarians, journalists, and members of the Female Tactical Platoon of the Afghan Special Security Forces” who are at risk of harm from the victorious Taliban. The letter continues:

While we welcomed the expansion of the eligibility requirements for Special Immigrant Visas and the creation of the Priority-2 category in the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, we must also protect those women who might fall through the cracks of the U.S. Government’s response.

One might have thought the cracks already small enough to prevent the plunge of even the slimmest, but, as we always hear, There’s So Much More That Needs To Be Done.
