Mexicans Protest Foreigners

Residents of Mexico City protested on Friday against growing numbers of expatriates, including Americans, who have moved there. Their leading complaint is that these foreigners are gentrifying areas of the city and pushing up the prices of rental properties beyond what many local people can pay.

Other concerns are that the newcomers don’t respect Mexican culture, refuse to learn Spanish, and don’t pay a fair share of taxes. One protestor told a reporter “You walk around here . . . and every two steps you see a foreigner. . . . [They are] people who don’t speak our language, don’t share our culture and are displacing [Mexicans].”

These sentiments are understandable, and if the Mexican people democratically decide that they want to limit the number of foreigners living in their county, that is their right. With this thought in mind, it would be helpful if Mexicans would consider that we Americans as a sovereign people, also have the same right.
