At least until an unelected district court judge gets his hand on a gavel, the Trump administration has canceled TPS protection for 72,000 citizens of Honduras and 4,000 citizens of Nicaragua living otherwise illegally in the United States.
Citizens of the two countries have enjoyed TPS status since Hurricane Mitch hit Central America 27 years ago. The Department of Homeland Security has concluded that finally conditions in those countries have improved enough to allow their people to return home. Consequently, they are being encouraged to collect $1000 and a complimentary plane ticket and self deport.
As suggested above, it is unlikely that all federal judges in this country share the DHS’s conviction. Stay tuned for the injunctions.
