Border Patrol agents have discovered a tunnel stretching between Mexico and the United States in the vicinity of San Diego. The tunnel, 50 feet deep at its deepest point, extended 2,900 feet, inluding 1,000 feet into the US. Measuring 42 inches in height and 28 inches in width, it contained a railroad-type-track for moving supplies — presumably drugs — along its length, as well as sophisticated electrical wiring system, lighting, and ventilation systems.
As the agents explored the tunnel, they were forced to overcome various barriers placed there to impede southward advance but ultimately discovered an apparent exit under Mexican territory. Local officials were notified of the discovery, and Mexican police located the exit under “freshly laid tile” within a residence in Nueve Tijuana.
This tunnel, which crossed under the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, joins a growing group of others recently discovered. El Paso Sector Border Patrol agents discovered a cross-border tunnel earlier this year, and oher tunnels were found in January.
