Until Friday, June 13, the City of Chicato had maintained a website — dubbed CityKey — that assisted illegal residents in obtaining local government-issued IDs. On that day, the City abruptly shut down the site when federal officials issued a subpoena requesting information about the site’s users. In closing it down, Chicago City Clerk Anna Valencia declaried, “This is Trump doing a witch hunt and intentionally trying to instill fear in people so that they can overtake our democracy.”
Meanwhile, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) urged residents to “rise up” in opposition to the legal enforcement of federal immigration laws, ahead of the weekend’s “No Kings” events carried out by leftists in the city and around the counry.
Valencia and other city officials are claiming they do not have to comply with the subpoena. It remains to be seen whether ICE will obtain a court order requiring their compliance.
