O Canada: Stop the Migrants

Since the re-election of Donald Trump, illegal immigration across both our southern and northern borders has drastically declined. However, because the border with Mexico has long been the busiest avenue into the US for illegal migrants, most of the attention of the CBP has been to the south. This, we now learn, has made possible an uptick in illegal traffic from Canada.

Illegal crossings from Canada have fallen from 12,085 in November to 4,098 in February, a 66% drop. However, that border is the largest land border in the world, stretching more than 5,500 miles of wilderness and generally unguarded territory. This makes it an attractive target for illegals closed out down south. Now, Canadian coyotes are advertising help with illegal border crossings for a few thousand dollars. Canadian residents are reporting sightings of migrants walking into the US across the unguarded border. And Canadian officials, primarily the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, are undermanned and under-funded.

Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA), co-chair of the Northern Border Security Caucus, said recently that, not only has the Canadian border not been closed, but “the most dangerous people are coming through the northern border.” As evidence, he pointed to Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, a 20-year-old Pakistani accused of plotting a Brooklyn Jewish center. Khan had come into Canada on a student visa and was 12 miles from an anticipated crossing of the US border when arrested by Canadian officials. He is now in the process of being extradited to the US.
