Yesterday was billed by the anti-ICE, anti-Trump left as a “day without immigrants,” but across the US, illegals and their supporters were highly visible. Thousands, many waving Mexican flags, shut down highways in Los Angeles, Santa Ana, Oakland, California, for example.
In Los Angeles, one of the largest protests of the day saw thousands of Mexican flag-waving protestors closing down the 101 Freeway. Throughout the day, they were confronted by large numbers of LAPD officers in riot gear. According to reports, around 5:00 pm the police seemed on the verge of arresting the protestors when, all of a sudden, they received orders to stand down and began withdrawing en masse. One reporter on the scene expressed shock:
UPDATE: As LAPD were about to make arrests, all of the police officers just … left. I’ve never seen anything like this. Hundreds of police with zip ties, and all of them have just left. No arrests, protestors shout in victory as police leave the area.
Reporter Bill Melugin tweeted similar remarks:
Hearing that LAPD rank and file who were down there are not happy about this apparent stand down order. “Same old crap.” “Chasing these guys around all day for nothing.”
The protest in Oakland was apparently arranged by a group that calls itself “BAMN,” or By Any Means Necessary. A BAMN spokesman, Jose Lagos, had an interesting take on how one becomes an American citizen:
If you live here, if you work here, if you go to school here and you contribute to this society economically or culturally that makes you a citizen and you should have the rights that come with being a citizen.
A continent away, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, another group protested the arrests and deportation of illegals, many of whom claimed legal status but avowed they were there to support their illegal relatives who were too “scared” to show themselves.
Elsehere, such as Minnesota, Chicago, and Washington, DC, some restaurants closed up for the day, either in solidarity with the protests or possibly because staff shortages.
Ridding the country of these criminal hordes is going to take determination. The numbers are incredible. It may be time to reconsider the estimates of how many “got-aways” have made it across the border in the past four years. I suspect the actual numbers will prove astounding.
