Trump Removes ICE Straitjacket

In 2021, then-DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas severely limited the options of ICE officials to go after illegal aliens. He issued a memo forbidding agents to pursue illegals beyond 100 miles from the border or to arrest them in any of the following places: “schools, universities, healthcare facilities, places of worship, ‘places where children gather,’ social service establishments, food banks, religious or civil ceremonies and disaster or emergency response and relief centers.”

Yesterday, President Trump removed that straitjacket by issuing a memo permitting the agency to pursue and arrest illegals anywhere in the country and allowing it to use common sense as to the locations in which it seeks them out.

ICE officials spoke favorably of the new rules, saying they will free them to pursue more illegal immigrants, many of whom have been able to avoid arrest by hiding in and around schools and churches.
