A large group of illegal migrants were intercepted crossing the border yesterday near Eagle Pass, Texas. The group, composed predominantly of natives of El Salvador, Ecuador, Cuba, Colombia, Brazil, and Venezuela. also included 11 Afghanis, considered Special Interest Aliens, or SIAs.
The Afghanis, along with 74 other single adults, were arrested for criminal trespass, a violation of Texas state law. The remainder, which included family groups and unaccompanied migrant children, were transferred to the Border Patrol for processing.
The presence of the “special interest” Afghanis indicated a change for the Eagle Pass crossing, long popular with many illegals, but once rarely used by SIAs. According to one unnamed CBP source, violence in the Mexican state of Sinaloa seems to be one reason those migrants are now choosing to cross into the US at Eagle Pass. The trend is troubling, the source said.
On Friday, the Border Patrol found seven other Special Interest Aliens — from Iran — among a large group of 289 who crossed the border in the same area.
