The Quote Below—More Misinformation from the Media
“[Truth] as not stopped Trump, who has long embraced a doctrine of ‘alternative facts’ that he alone decrees. And he is only the latest in a long line of demagogues who have, throughout our history, demonized foreigners for political profit.
“Today, Trump’s main targets are Latinos and Muslims, with some anti-Asian slurs thrown in. If anything, he stepping up his anti-immigrant crusade, accusing foreigners of ‘poisoning the blood’ of native-born citizens and vowing to begin ‘the largest deportation operation in American history.”
“President Joe Biden’s chaotic and confused response to the huge influx of undocumented migrants along the southern border has given Trump a political gift. . . . But Biden missteps should not hide a basic truth. Trump’s anti-immigrant campaign is based on a big lie. . . . [which] is incoherently and incontrovertibly incorrect.
“Immigration has propelled the U.S. job market further than just about anyone expected, helping cement the country’s economic rebound from the pandemic as the most robust in the world, writes the Washington Post.
“There are many factors at work here. The U.S. birth rate has dropped to 1.6 children per woman, far below the rate of 2.1 that is needed to keep the population stable. Meanwhile, Baby Boomers. Born between 1946 and 1964, are leaving the workforce, and those two trends alone could create a demographic disaster. . . . Trump’s draconian restrictions on immigration only aggravated those problems, and Biden’s reversal of his policies gave the economy a major lift.
“The impact of [foreign] workers will be even more significant looking ahead. The Congressional Budget Office estimates will add $7 trillion in economic growth over the next decade—if they are not throttled by a Trump comeback. . . .“ — America First? Only with the Help of Immigrants, Steven Roberts, Chicago Sun Times 3/8/24 [Link]
Fact Check of Above Quote: One of a number of falsehoods in the piece is the claim that Joe Biden’s response to the border crisis was “chaotic and confused.” To the contrary, it was carefully planned to open our gates to as many illegal aliens as possible. Biden removed Donald Trump’s border control policies, while twisting the law to legalize the movement of large numbers of illegal aliens into our country.
Former President Trump is not a demagogue when he expresses proper outrage against this deliberate subversion of our rule of law. Furthermore Trump has never “slurred” immigrants in general, though he has used some blunt language against those who flout our laws, disregard our society, and pose danger to American citizens. If the truth be known, most of the slurs these days are those that the media elites direct toward “deplorable” average Americans. Illegal aliens always get a free media pass because they are just “undocumented.”
The author of this piece errs when he claims that our economy is prospering—a situation he attributes to mass immigration, In fact, the economy is performing well for the well-to-do elites of our society. For average Americans that is not the case. Many have to live from paycheck to paycheck, in a job market where wages often don’t keep up with inflation.
The official low unemployment rate belies the fact the growing number of Americans who have dropped out of the job market are not counted as unemployed. Neither are people who can’t find full-time employment and must settle for often low-paying part-time jobs. Immigration lowers the wages of low-income Americans Research shows that mass immigration, by lowering wages and increasing profits, is a mechanism of transferring wealth from the less-well-off to the wealthy.
The argument that immigration will make up for a low U.S. birth rate is not accurate because the birth rates of immigrants are also declining. Even increasing current immigration will not significantly increase the U.S. working population over time. The claim that immigration will add trillions to the economy (measured in GDP) is misleading. The true benefit to the economy is measured in per capita GDP. Immigration reduces that per capita measure, as noted by the Congressional Budget Office.
If the author of this article really wants to see someone who decrees “alternative facts,” he should stop pointing to Donald Trump. Instead, he should look in a mirror.
