Steven Malanga has published an article in City Journal entitled “Illegal Immigration’s Terrifying Cost.” It summarizes the tax burdens that illegal immigration is placing on states and cities across our country. The expenditures for them, says Malanga, are “exploding.” Of Texas he writes:
“In a 2021 lawsuit filed by Texas against the Biden administration . . . the state listed $850 million of extraordinary costs due to illegals—including more than $579 million annually at public hospitals for uncompensated medical care and more than $30 million in prenatal care. Texas also reported spending about $150 million a year on incarcerating criminal migrants, and up to $63 million to educate unaccompanied immigrant minors now domiciled in the state.”
Illegal alien advocates often claim that the taxes paid by illegals eventually will make up for their costs. Malanga says this is highly unlikely because so many illegals are poor and unskilled, a group which generally consumes more in benefits than it pays in taxes.
