We’ve remarked before on the uptick in illegal crossings of the Canadian border into the United States, but now it’s getting serious.
Border Patrol officials in the Swanton Sector (covering Vermont, New Hampshire, and eastern New York) are saying they have nabbed more illegal migrants so far this fiscal year than they did in the prior nine years combined. Since October 1, 2022, the number of illegal border crossers apprehended have totaled more than 5,400. Compare that with the 4,098 migrants apprehended between October 1, 1999, and September 30, 2022.
Even more concerning is that many of the illegals caught are taking obvious pains to avoid capture, suggesting involvement in crimes in addition to border-jumping, such as drug smuggling.
Though the Canadian surge is alarming, the total numbers still are dwarfed by those on our border with Mexico, where the Texas state government’s Operation Lone Star is racking up mind-blowing statistics. According to Texas officials,
Under Operation Lone Star, Texas National Guard soldiers and DPS troopers have apprehended over 393,000 illegal immigrants, repelled more than 49,000 illegal immigrants, seized over 422 million lethal doses of fentanyl and over 8,000 weapons, and arrested over 31,000 criminals – all of which would have otherwise made their way into communities across Texas and our country thanks to President Biden’s open border policies.
Texas says it will keep up the enforcement until “President Biden steps up and does his job.” That means they’ll be at it for a while.
