Controlling the border would only fix part of the problem of illegal immigration. According to some estimates, nearly half of illegal aliens are foreigners who entered legally on temporary visas but remained in the U.S. violation of the law after their visas expired.
To address this issue, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) has introduced a measure he calls the ‘Immigration Detention and Enforcement Account.” It would require visa holders to pay between $5,000 and $15,000 in a bond or cash payment. They would get the money back when they leave. If they don’t go home, the money would go into an account administered by Department of Homeland Security to fund immigration law enforcement.
Vance stated, “America is a welcoming nation, but we are also a nation of laws. There are millions of people in this country who have abused our visa system and circumvented our legal immigration process. . . . “I’m proud to introduce this legislation and bring some sanity to our broken immigration system.”
