International Red Cross: Mexican Violence “Deeply Concerning”

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a supposed neutral and independent humanitarian organization that says its mission is to protect and assist victims of war and violence. The ICRC has been operating worldwide since 1863 and is based in Geneva, Switzerland. It is funded mainly by voluntary donations from governments and National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. It has had a presence in Mexico since 1981.

In its 2022-2023 Humanitarian Balance report, released April 13, the ICRC expresses deep concern about the ongoing violence in Mexico, which it compares to the levels seen in an active war zone. The report highlights the high number of murders, forced disappearances, and cases of people forced to leave their homes due to insecurity. For example, in 2022, Mexico recorded 30,968 murders; in 2021, 35,625. The report also claims that in 2022, Mexico saw more than 100,000 cases of forced disappearances. The ICRC notes that most of the violence in Mexico is directly linked to crimes distinctive to those carried out by drug cartels, such as extortion, kidnapping, and trafficking.

The IRC is right. Mexico is a failed state, large parts of which exist in a perpetual state of low-intensity warfare. Unfortunately, the Red Cross’s insistence on its purity of intent aside, the organization has been a willing and active participant in luring migrants from around the world to the very country that it is now condemning. See, for example, our posting on March 10, 2023, titled, “Red Cross Assisting Illegal Migrants with Maps and Guides.” That article reveals how the Red Cross has essentially made itself an enabler in human smuggling and trafficking by providing active assistance to illegal migrants, encouraging those migrants to risk the dangers it is warning against.

You can’t have it both ways, IRC. You can’t be a defender of migrants’ safety while at the same time encouraging them to risk everything by traipsing through a lawless country.
