Yesterday, we reported that our country is being besieged on three fronts: the southern border, the Florida coast, and the Canadian border. It looks like we spoke too soon. Now we learn that front number four has opened. And it’s Alabama.
Yes, on February 9, a small, makeshift raft was spotted in the Gulf of Mexico about 400 miles out from Mobile. The Styrofoam craft held eight Cuban migrants, who were taken on board a Coast Guard cutter and turned over to the CBP in Venice, Louisiana. The CBP did not reveal how long the migrants had been at sea or whether they had intentionally headed for the Gulf Coast or just accidentally missed the Florida Keys, the intended destination of most Cuban migrants.
The migrants were held for processing in New Orleans and presumably will be returned to Cuba.
Encountering boat people along the Gulf Coast adds new meaning to the expression, “We’re all border states now.”
