Immigration advocates claim that we have a “labor shortage.” To make up for an alleged lack of Americans to do jobs, they maintain, we must admit immigrants. Steve Camarota of the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) challenged this assertion in a recent column in The Washington Times.
Camarota observed that many Americans of working age are not in the workforce. This particularly applies to those with limited skills. The decline of U.S. workers participating in the workforce is part of a long-term trend which corresponds to the surge of mass immigration since the sixties.
Immigration discourages Americans from working by lowering wages and preventing improvement of working conditions. Camarota says our leaders should seek the wellbeing of our own working-age people before opening our gates to foreigners.
