Cuban Crop Duster Lands in Florida

Thus far this month, more than nine hundred illegal migrants have been intercepted at sea. Thousands more have entered the U.S. from Mexico. Now, at least one Cuban migrant has flown to the U.S. aboard a hijacked airplane.

On Friday, October 21, one Rubén Martínez, a 29-year-old employee of the Cuban government’s National Air Services Company (ENSA), landed a Soviet-era crop-dusting biplane at an airport in Dade County, Florida. Martínez had left the ENSA airport ostensibly to perform crop dusting but instead flew to the U.S. Cuban officials labeled his actions piracy and said they represent a “violation of Cuban airspace, operational safety and aeronautical regulations.”

CBP officials were somewhat more vague about Martínez’s status in the U.S., saying they will “follow existing policies to determine the admissibility and immigration status of the Cuban citizen.” In the meantime, he is being held at an undisclosed location.
