A New Caravan Forms

A new caravan of approximately 2000 migrants is forming on the border of Guatemala and Honduras. Most of them are from Venezuela. A spokesman for the Guatemalan government noted that “Overall, we know that people don’t want to come to Guatemala to stay. We are a country of transit.” The ultimate goal is the United States.

Many of these Venezuelans no doubt will try to claim asylum when they get here. But if freedom from persecution is all they want, they could claim asylum in one of the countries they transit before reaching our border. Those countries, however, don’t offer the economic benefits of the U.S.
