Who Deserves Dignity?

The Quote Below—More Misinformation from the Media

“On Wednesday, the city of Miami Beach did something powerful. With unanimous support, the city commission adopted a resolution I sponsored condemning the use of dangerous and dehumanizing rhetoric against immigrants. . . .

“It says: “The Miami Beach mayor and commission strongly oppose dehumanizing and violent rhetoric targeting immigrants, including the Alligator Alcatraz detention facility and statements by national leaders and is affirming the dignity and contributions of Hispanic and immigrant families in Miami Beach. . . .” This resolution makes Miami Beach one of the first cities in Florida to formally oppose Alligator Alcatraz and the national political discourse that supports it.

“I understand the complexity of immigration in this country. And I welcome robust, even passionate debate about how to fix the system. But that debate cannot happen if we begin by stripping people of their human dignity.

“If we can agree to speak with respect about immigrants, we may clear away enough of the static to begin a more thoughtful, less performative conversation about real solutions. . . .That fear is not a reflection of their character — it’s a reflection of ours. It means the promise of America that once welcomed my family is slipping further out of reach.

“That promise now feels endangered by a rising tide of anti-immigrant rhetoric designed not to inform, but to inflame.

“Political leaders have repeatedly referred to immigrants as ‘animals,’ ‘vermin,’ ‘poison’ and ‘parasites.’ That’s not just offensive — it’s dangerous. . . .

“For months, I’ve struggled with the limits of what I can do legally. . . .  In the absence of stronger protections, this resolution is about doing what I still can — standing up for dignity. . . ..” — I’m Proud Miami Beach Is Standing Up against Anti-Immigrant Rhetoric, Alex Fernandez, Miami Herald, 7/26/25 [Link]

Fact Check of Above Quote: This writer, Alex Fernandez, clearly includes illegal aliens as the “immigrants” he defends. To illustrate, the “discourse” about Alligator Alcatraz he cites does not involve people who came here legally.

Fernandez is quite concerned that we respect the “dignity” of illegal aliens, but just what dignity do they deserve? They are people who have shown disrespect toward our country by breaking our laws, and using resources intended for American citizens. Many of them may not merit our contempt, but they certainly don’t deserve our respect. Some, however, are completely contemptible, and should be labeled as such.

Examples are members of vicious gangs such as MS-13, murderous criminals whom President Trump rightly described as animals. Society has every right to express outrage against these predators—and to let them know that destinations like Alligator Alcatraz may await them.

Americans in general are weary of the propagandists who portray illegal aliens in the best possible light, while heaping abuse on citizens who simply want their borders controlled. Among the terms of this abuse are “deplorable” and “racist.” Some of this animus goes even further, as when former President Biden referred to Trump supporters as “garbage.” If anyone is entitled to dignity, it is those patriotic Americans who uphold our country’s sovereign right to enact and enforce immigration laws.
