The Trump Administration has largely secured our border with Mexico. U.S. Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks reported a record low of only 4,000 arrests of illegal aliens along the border during the first 27 months of July. Banks observed that “Our enforcement posture is effective the border is fortified, and deterrence is in motion.”
This development is interesting in light of the claims going back decades that controlling the Mexican border was simply impossible, so it was futile even to try. One of the more recent examples was an article in the New York Times, published in 2023 by open-border supporter David Bier. The title was “Biden Can’t Stop Immigration. Time to Embrace It.”
In a similar vein, National Public Radio declared last year that “despite a fortified border, migrants will keep coming.”
Now that Trump is controlling the border, these claims reveal themselves as self-serving propaganda to discourage border control. In truth, we always had the capacity to secure the border. What was lacking was the will. Now Trump has proven the old adage: Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
