Todd Bensman of the Center for Immigration studies (CIS) recently presented his views, in an interview with Border Hawk News, on how the Trump Administration will proceed to crack down on illegal immigration. He praised President-elect Trump’s selection of former acting director of ICE Tom Homan for his “border czar.” Bensman said Homan is “absolutely committed to the mission set.”
Nevertheless, Bensman cautioned, the effort probably will go forward “a little slower than people think. Because, remember, the Biden administration has totally dismantled the deportation and detention system. Piece by piece.”
He also warned about obstruction from the “pro-open border, pro-illegal immigrant industrial complex [which is] already geared up and organized to do lawfare and propaganda, information war. So, this thing is going to get ugly, fast. No matter what [Trump] does.”
Despite these obstacles, Bensman maintained that Trump’s strong stance against illegal immigration is already bearing results. The Mexican government, following Trump’s threats of tariffs, seems to be willing to cooperate with him. Also, many potential illegal aliens are reconsidering their options in light of Trump’s rhetoric.
Bensman observed that “There’s a principle at play, here. No migrant wants to drop ten thousand dollars if they know they’re going to get stuck in Mexico, or deported all the way to their home countries. . . . I just came back from Mexico City, from all those camps, and interviewed all kinds of people down there, and lots of lots of them were telling me they’re going home.”
