Earlier this week it appeared that the Biden Administration was planning to build a 20-mile border wall along a key sector in South Texas. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stated in the Federal Register that he would wave 26 federal laws to get the project underway.
Many were astounded by the announcement because the administration has long claimed that border walls were inhumane and represented “misplaced priorities.” Some commentators speculated that–as we move into an election year–the administration wanted to give the impression that it has at least some interest in border control.
That impression, however, may have been too much for the administration’s numerous open border allies. Perhaps for that reason, Mayorkas reversed himself on Thursday.
Said the Secretary “I want to address today’s reporting relating to a border wall and be absolutely clear. There is no new administration policy with respect to border walls. From day one, this Administration has made clear that a border wall is not the answer. That remains our position and our position has never wavered. The language in the Federal Register notice is being taken out of context and it does not signify any change in policy whatsoever.”
