Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), the presumed GOP vice presidential candidate, took aim at false platitudes used to justify mass immigration. In a speech before the NatCon4 conference, Vance denied that America exists as a set of ideas, one of which is that we are a “nation of immigrants” and that as such, we have no right to to limit immigration.
Vance affirmed that “America is not just an idea — though we we founded on great ideas. America is a nation. It is a group of people with a common history and a common future. . . . One of the parts of that commonality as a people is that. . . . [When] we allow newcomers to this country. . . . [w]e allow them on our terms, on the terms of the American citizens.” In other words, immigration exists to serve America; America doesn’t exist to serve immigration.
And just how well is immigration serving our country? Earlier in his speech Vance observed that “No one can avoid that [immigration] has made our societies poorer, less safe, less prosperous, and less advanced.”
He also rebutted the idea, often advanced by political elites, that putting America first is a danger to democracy. With respect to immigration. he affirmed that “The real threat to American democracy is not . . . some foreign dictator who doesn’t like America or our values. The real threat to American democracy is that American voters keep on voting for less immigration, and our American politicians keep on rewarding us with more.
